Karen has been “creating” in one way or another for more than 40 years. Recognizing early her love of color, textiles and words, she began painting and sewing in her teens. Growing up in Ocean City, Karen and her brothers and sister all enjoyed skating, surfing, and embracing the island life. There was always a source of artistic inspiration from the ocean and bay. She began sewing and designing in earnest in her early twenties, making everything from t-shirts and tablecloths for local businesses to doing alterations, bridal veils, accessories and nursery layettes for friends and family.
Karen loves to blend mediums, painting on fabric and glass, installing beads and findings on clothing and home décor, and adding visual images to the poetry she writes.
In the late 80’s and early 90’s Karen used her talents for writing and drawing to start a small business creating brochures for real estate doing renderings from blue prints and writing advertising copy for realtors all over South Jersey. She also painted signs and created ad campaigns for local small businesses. All the while Karen continued sewing clothing, making jewelry and painting on glass. Acquiring fabric and beads during her travels to Florida, North Carolina and other destinations.
In the late 90s, armed with all the goods she had been making and stowing away, she took her wares to local craft fairs, and from there Luna Sea Designs was born. Inspired by all things Sun, Moon, Stars and Ocean, Karen began designing tropically inspired clothing, glass paintings, jewelry and accessories and natural health and beauty products.
In 2001 along with her husband, Luna Sea Designs found a home in a little side shop in Ocean City, paired with her husband’s massage therapy center and martial arts studio, Luna Sea Designs grew and gave rise to Luna Sea Health Food Market. Karen and her husband operated their businesses in Ocean City until 2009.
Fast forward almost another decade and the sewing and painting and making continue. Coming full circle, Luna Sea Designs is back where it started, ready to make the rounds with local art shows.
Karen comes from a family where the creative river flows through many hands, the artistic history stems from a grandmother who was an artist, graphic arts designer and seamstress. Her sister is known in the South Jersey area for her word-working, photo-real pencil portraits and more recently for her gorgeous wave paintings. Her brother is an owner of a successful advertising agency and once upon a time air-brushed designs for a southern New Jersey surfboard company.
Karen is also a published poet, and a professional formal wear seamstress. She lives in Mays Landing, with her husband of 30 years, Joseph. They have 4 children and 6 grandchildren.
